Dom DeLuise

It seems like only yesterday that I was talking about Dom DeLuise.  Wait... it WAS yesterday!  Actually, it was two weeks ago that I blogged about a couple of his recipes.  Yesterday, I am sad to say, he passed away.

Dom DeLuise
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dom DeLuise, the portly entertainer and chef whose affable nature made him a popular character actor for decades with movie and TV audiences as well as directors and fellow actors, has died. He was 75.
DeLuise died Monday evening at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, said his agent, Robert Malcolm. The family did not release the cause of death.
DeLuise appeared in scores of movies and TV shows, in Broadway plays and voicing characters for numerous cartoons. Writer-director-actor Mel Brooks particularly admired DeLuise's talent for offbeat comedy and cast him in several films, including "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie," "History of the World Part I" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights."
His TV credits included appearances on such shows as "The Munsters," "The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.," "Burke's Law," "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and "Diagnosis Murder." On Broadway, DeLuise appeared in Neil Simon's "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" and other plays.
In part because of his passion for food, the actor battled obesity, reaching as much as 325 pounds and for years resisting family members and doctors who tried to put him on various diets. He finally agreed in 1993 when his doctor refused to perform hip replacement surgery until he lost 100 pounds (he lost enough weight for the surgery, though gained some of it back).
His love of food also resulted in two successful cookbooks, 1988's "Eat This — It Will Make You Feel Better!" and 1997's "Eat This Too! It'll Also Make You Feel Good."

His official site has this to say...

"It's easy to mourn his death, but easier to remember a time when he made you laugh."

Memorial services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to one of the following charities:

The Lily Sanctuary www.lilysanctuary.org

Hydrocephalus Foundation, Inc. www.hydrocephalus.org

Swine Flucation

Those crazy kids...This is just too funny!

The school that I work for got closed last Thursday due to a case of Swine Flu.  We were one of the first schools to close and were supposed to remain closed until the 14th.  We ended up reopening on Tuesday for Fac/Staff and on Wednesday for students.  This is big news.  In fact, it must be HUGE news as when Wednesday morning came around the news trucks were waiting to get on campus.  News helicoptors were in the air above the school.   Cameramen and reporters were waiting with baited breath to see if the students really WOULD be attending school yesterday.

It was on the 5:00 news last night and on the front page of our local news websites.

Umm.  Did I miss something?  The last I heard, teenagers were required to attend high school.  It's what they do.  They don't have jobs.  I have no clue as to why this would be breaking news.  But I thought it was pretty damn funny so I took a picture of a couple of trucks waiting to film our kids getting out of chapel yesterday morning.

Still Alive

I am still here.  Hubby came home and we are having fun spending time together.  The school I work for closed due to a case of the Swine Flu so we got to spend an additional 3 wonderful days together that we were not expecting.  He will be here until the 15th... seems like time is flying by!!

School opens again tomorrow...

Silly Blog

I couldn't log in last night to post so I guess I will post double today.  That should be easy.

So... guess who is coming home tomorrow!  HUBBY!  I am very excited tho that means my spa stuff, which was planned for Saturday, isn't going to happen.  I guess I can give myself a mani & a pedi or better yet, take hubby with me!

Four months is simply too long to be apart!

Pfft

It's really kind of stupid but, for an ADDITIONAL $9.99 a month, I can hide my posts from you.  What the hell is that?  Why would I put a million blogs online, hide 1, and pay an additional $10 a month to hide that secret?  If I ever have a secret that sacred I promise you will be able to read about it in the enquirer.  And I will be charging $10 an issue

Second Verse, Same as the First...

Last night's soup was so good that we had the leftovers tonight.  I also added the recipe under the pictures from yesterday's post.

In other news, hubby is coming home on THURSDAY!!  Yay!!  I guess there is a holiday this Saturday in Saudi Arabia so he gets to combine his weekend with his vacation days and come home three days early!  I am SO freaking excited!!

Pasta Fagioli

These pictures are from Olive Garden but I have made the soup from a recipe I got from Dom Deluise.  Let me tell you, if you want to learn how to cook well learn from a fat Italian!

The best soup. Ever.

Add a little cheese...

Let it melt a little...

Serve with breadsticks and salad...

MMMmmmmmmmmmm!

Here is my recipe...

    4 garlic cloves, minced
    3 tablespoons olive oil
    2 ounce can tomato sauce
    1.5 cup water
    2 16-ounce can cannellini beans
2 pound ditalini or elbow macaroni, cooked al dente
1lb lean ground beef, crumbled and browned
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese to taste for garnish
    Black pepper to taste
In sauce pan, fry garlic gently in oil until golden brown. Add tomato sauce and water; simmer for 10 minutes. Add beans, cook 5 minutes more.

Add ditalini or elbow macaroni; add browned ground beef; stir gently, continue to simmer until flavors have assimilated. If it gets too thick, add a little more water. Sprinkle with grated cheese and black pepper, if desired.

Serve immediately, or pasta will absorb all the liquid.

Stormy Weather

I slept until noon.  I can't remember the last time I have done that!  I normally wake up at 5am on weekdays and about 7am on weekends.  I always say that I am going to sleep in, but I rarely do.

Last night I stayed after work to see the school dance concert.  Those kids are amazing at what they do and it makes me happy to see them outside of the classrooms.  So, a couple of friends and I went to dinner, had a couple of margaritas, then went to the show.  I left just before 10pm and came home.  I drank a glass of wine and went to bed at about 2am.  HERE is where I goofed up.  I took a sleeping pill.  Yeah.  I slept like a rock.

Hubby called early this morning to tell me that he is still sick (sounds like the flu) and I went back to sleep, not waking up again until after noon.  Now I feel all icky and I don't know if it is because I took the sleeping pill after the wine or if I am getting sick as well.  I couldn't have caught it from Hubby as he is 8k miles away.

On top of that, it has been raining since last night.  I love it when it rains.  I just wish I felt like enjoying it.
